Welcome to the second installment of our series. After our deep dive into the nursing rooms, today I’m taking you behind the scenes to reveal a well-kept secret in Taoyuan International Airport’s (TPE) Departure Zone D, along with some exciting new facilities.
You may have heard buzz about the new Terminal 3 North Concourse, but the northern side of Terminal 2—specifically the D-gate boarding area—quietly completed its own renovation late last year. It now features a host of fresh amenities, including new dining options and the star of this article: the brand-new, ultra-luxury restrooms. I’ll be honest, I wouldn’t have noticed if a little birdie hadn’t tipped me off. I have to say, this is easily the most time I’ve ever spent researching “restrooms” for a single blog post!
Before we test out the facilities, here are two essential things you need to know about navigating between terminals:
Two Things You Must Know About Navigating Between Terminals
- 1. Terminals 1 and 2 are connected airside: Once you pass through security, there is a walkway connecting Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 (Zone A connects to D, and Zone B connects to C). Please note that there is no Skytrain inside the restricted departure area. If you are walking between terminals, please allow at least 30 minutes.
- Since there is no airside train, if you need to take the Skytrain between terminals, you must do so before checking your bags and clearing security. If you are already inside the departure area, walking is your only option, so plan accordingly.
- A common scenario involves Starlux Airlines passengers. If you wish to use the Starlux lounge near Gate D6 in Terminal 2, you certainly can, but please arrive at the airport early. You should start heading toward your boarding gate at least 30 minutes before boarding, as the walk from D6 to the B1 gates takes exactly half an hour.
- Starlux Lounge Walking Test: As mentioned, if you’re flying Starlux and want to visit the D6 lounge, be mindful of your time. I’ve walked this route myself, and it takes a solid 30 minutes to reach the B1 gates.
- Pro-tip: That 30-minute estimate is for a brisk, direct walk. If you stop to browse shops, you’ll need even more time. Always buffer your schedule!
- If the Skytrain is undergoing maintenance at night, you can take the night shuttle bus between terminals before clearing security. Don’t worry if you head to the wrong terminal—you’re covered!

A Pilgrimage to the TOTO-Collaborated Restrooms (Airside)
It is no exaggeration to say these are the most luxurious restrooms in Taoyuan Airport.
I did some digging and discovered that the total cost of these facilities exceeded 10 million TWD! They are equipped with top-of-the-line, fully automatic TOTO toilets and premium bathroom fixtures. The automatic-opening toilets alone cost nearly 100,000 TWD each (I know this because I have the same model at home). Given the investment, I made it a point to visit and experience them firsthand.
Did you know that Taoyuan Airport is the first international airport in the world to feature dedicated ostomy-friendly restrooms? Both the men’s and women’s facilities include a specially designed space to accommodate the needs of all travelers.
Writing this piece made me realize how much thought goes into restroom design. Beyond the adjustable heights for accessibility, the attention to detail is incredible. For example, the family restrooms feature “dual-height locks”—the higher one is out of reach for curious toddlers, allowing parents to use the facilities with peace of mind.

It’s not just this one location; the restrooms near Gate D10, close to the Terminal 3 North Concourse, have also been beautifully renovated.
Seeing these facilities, I have to give a huge shout-out to the cleaning staff. Just in the Terminal 2 Zone D departure area alone, there are 14 restrooms to maintain. The amount of effort required to keep these pristine is immense, especially considering the hundreds of restrooms scattered across the entire airport.
New Dining Options at Gates D6/D7
Looking back at my archives, this area has been undergoing changes for a while, with final adjustments completed in 2025. The dining options are now more diverse than ever.
The open space now features massive LED walls playing immersive 3D animations, giving the concourse a futuristic, high-tech vibe. And here’s a big surprise I discovered: Taoyuan Airport now has another 24-hour “Midnight Diner”! Yes, Jin Xian Braised Pork Rice is now open around the clock, joining the existing 24-hour options in Zones C and D.

Xiang Niu Beef Noodle House
Xiang Niu Beef Noodle House (Open 06:00 – 22:00): If you want to savor a bowl of iconic Taiwanese beef noodles before your flight, this is a popular choice.

Jin Xian Braised Pork Rice (24 Hours)
Jin Xian Braised Pork Rice (24 Hours): You can’t talk about Taiwanese street food without mentioning braised pork rice! The long queues are a testament to its popularity. The best part? It’s open 24/7 (as of May 2026), making it a perfect spot for red-eye flight travelers to grab a midnight meal.

Burger Island
Burger Island (Open 06:00 – 22:00): Catering to international travelers, Burger Island offers classic Western comfort food. This local Taiwanese brand serves up wagyu burgers and various fried snacks.

Starlux Airlines Lounge (D6)
Starlux has also established a lounge in Terminal 2 to serve its passengers. This space is relatively more spacious than their Terminal 1 location, allowing for a more comprehensive service experience.

The Large Sofas at Gate D10
Near Gate D10, there’s a hidden area with incredibly comfortable, oversized sofas. The four colors of the sofas represent the four corporate identity colors of the Taoyuan Airport Corporation. I made sure to avoid capturing people in my photos, but this is a popular “nap zone” for savvy travelers who know these sofas are perfect for a quick rest.

D3 Travel Pharmacy & Cosmetics
Beyond dining, the biggest worry before a flight is forgetting an essential item. Taoyuan Airport has numerous pharmacies and cosmetic shops, and you can find one in almost every major zone.

D3/D7 Electronics

D10 Assistance Cart
Since there is still a distance to travel to the Terminal 3 North Concourse, passengers needing extra assistance (those with limited mobility, tight connections, or traveling with young children) can call for an assistance cart. These are available at both Gate D10 and Gate D5.
