On this trip, I had the chance to fly on two different types of EVA Air’s 787 aircraft. To be direct, the interiors weren’t significantly different, with the only notable variation being the seating capacity.
787-9: Seating Capacity: 304 (Royal Laurel Class: 26 / Economy Class: 278)
787-10: Seating Capacity: 342 (Royal Laurel Class: 34 / Economy Class: 308)
- October 15, 2022: TPE-NRT, BR198, B789 (787-9), B-17883
October 19, 2022: NRT-TPE, BR197, B78X (787-10), B-17807 - Economy class features a 3-3-3 seating configuration.
- EVA Air has resumed operations for its Business Class and Garden Lounge. The Silver Kris Lounge (CLUB) remains closed. Starbucks and most duty-free shops within the restricted area are also reopening.
- The entertainment system control box in the 787 Economy Class is cleverly hidden, ensuring it doesn’t encroach on passenger legroom.
- The lavatories are equipped with a red/green light indicator outside, clearly showing whether they are occupied.
- The 787 design inherently maintains a higher cabin humidity. My tests indicated the cabin humidity was around 40%, significantly higher than the 20% found on other aircraft types.
- The headrest design allows for a very high adjustment, which is a feature I particularly appreciate.
- EVA Air uses the new “Travel Lounge” at Narita Airport. Star Alliance Gold members can access the ANA Lounge.
- For long-haul flights in Economy Class on this aircraft, I recommend bringing a seat cushion for added comfort. This is a common trend in the airline industry today, where passenger comfort is sometimes sacrificed in pursuit of lighter aircraft.
Taipei – Tokyo: Security Check

Now, you can confirm by just matching the number on the luggage tag.
This is very helpful for those who are still groggy in the morning.

I specifically took a photo of the regulations for hand tools.

Taipei – Tokyo: Gold Card Lounge

Anyway, the reclining lounge area that used to be there is back.

Taipei – Tokyo: BR198, 787-9

I really like this design.

The yellow light above the passenger’s head has been changed to blue.
This makes it easier to identify at a glance.

They have been replaced with electronically controlled ones.
This allows flight attendants to control them directly during takeoff and landing
without disturbing passengers.

Compared to other models, it increases from 20% to 40%.

Tokyo – Taipei: 787-10 Seat
For this flight, I specifically chose seat 58H in the last row
to capture photos of a standard seat, as the configuration differs from exit row seats.
The TV screen for exit row seats is hidden beneath the armrest.
For standard seats, the TV is located on the back of the seat in front.

Thanks to modern electronics, the entertainment system control boxes are becoming increasingly compact.
Due to strict aviation industry certifications and testing, new technologies typically take five to ten years to be adopted.
As you can see in the image below, the control box for this seat model occupies very little space.
You can refer to my other article comparing control boxes across various airline models.

The tray table features a two-fold design.
The storage area in front has two pockets, convenient for placing your phone or passport.

Tokyo – Taipei: Meal
I ordered the Basil Pork Belly Rice, a collaboration with Shin Yeh. I personally found it delicious and highly recommend it.

with a distinct Japanese flair.
EVA Air Lounge
Since the United Airlines lounge and the ANA lounge near Gate 34 were not open, and I didn’t want to backtrack to the ANA lounge near the immigration area, I chose the EVA Air lounge. This is a new lounge, still adorned with flower wreaths, located near Gate 26.
A notable feature is that it offers paid access.

With this PASS, all food and beverage orders are complimentary
because the lounge is open to all passengers for paid entry simultaneously.

This price includes only beverages, not meals.
