Jesse spent a solid six days, staying only within the airport, to find good places for everyone to rest and sleep. In this “Sleeping at the Airport” series, Jesse is checking out Haneda Airport. Over these two trips, Jesse spent several nights wandering around, observing where people usually rest. Just walking around takes at least an hour to cover the whole airport, not to mention documenting the conditions at different times. Jesse hopes these experiences will help travelers who need to spend the night at the airport find a comfortable place to rest.
This article includes information about dining at restaurants, sleeping on the floor, and accommodation.
- 2024.09 Photos and late-night restaurant list updated
- I recommend the SPORT BAR at Haneda Airport Garden. It’s not crowded, has air conditioning, and serves simple meals. (Check out SPORT BAR)
- Here are some tips for 2024: if you plan to sleep on the floor, get to the airport early to grab a spot. You might not find a place otherwise, and in the summer, the air conditioning in many places isn’t very cold.
Since I know many people take red-eye flights to save money, this article mainly focuses on sleeping on the floor for rest. However, it also includes other, more comfortable options that cost extra. I also want to remind you that air conditioning isn’t great in many places during the summer, so if you get hot easily, consider going to Quan Tian Kong Hot Spring at the very least.

Since only the third terminal operates 24 hours, if you want to sleep on the floor, you can skip the first and second terminals. They close and clear out in the early morning, leaving only hotel options. So, if you need to sleep late at night, you can only do so in the third terminal. All three terminals have hotels, but if you’re looking to sleep on the floor, head to the third one. Jesse has stayed at all the hotels in Haneda Airport, and they are also introduced in this article.
Earplugs and a jacket are essential. Having a cushion would make resting a bit more comfortable.nEating is fine; there are 24-hour stores. If you’re looking for a quiet place to rest, a tip is to head up to the fourth or fifth floors.
You should bring a portable charger. There are charging areas in the departure hall on the third floor. There’s also a spot to charge on the first floor, but it’s usually packed, or you’ll need to bring an extension cord.

Haneda Airport Floors
- First, let’s get the floors straight. Haneda Airport has five floors. The third floor is the departure hall (leaving Japan), and the second floor is the arrival hall (arriving in Japan).
- Haneda Airport Garden is a complex with hotels, hot springs, and restaurants. You can walk to Haneda Airport Garden from the second-floor arrival lobby via a connecting skybridge.

There are quite a few people resting in this area with the red seats. They’re a decent length and there are plenty of them, with these red seats all over the fourth floor. The material is wood, with red fabric laid on top. It’s recommended to wear a jacket in winter, and this area can get quite hot in the summer.

Continuing from the fourth floor’s Haneda Nihonbashi, the entrances of the shops here all have waiting areas with wooden chairs covered in red cloth.

The second floor is brighter and also has quite a few sofas. The sofas here also have armrests.

There are chairs for resting, but they also have armrests in the middle. Currently, you can only sit down to rest. The authorities have banned lying on the ground or on the chairs. So, this is just a place to rest. However, fewer people come here, so you’ll always find a spot if you want to sit.
